Is your website optimized for humans?

Search engine opimization has been sold over the years as though it were some sort of magic formula that guarantees success. Building websites that naturally are picked up by search engines isn't rocket science. The future of running a successful website online consists of insuring that your website is optimized for human consumption.

What is human optimization?

Humane optimization of interactive media is the ongoing process of ensuring human needs (as well as wants) are put before technology and that technology finds it's place as a servant to those needs or wants. Humane optimization also includes ensuring technology keeps up with or upgrades alongside human experience and that budget allows it. In most cases it's the other way around, the budget determines the technology (search engine optimization costs extra) and human experience follows suit. Web usability as we know it is long overdue an upgrade, not only because it is also being sold as an extra just like search engine optimization, but also because it too follows technology.

While gathering information for my long awaited book (which by the way is currently being tested by humans), I've research lots of material and have spoken to many people. In particular with individuals that had various visual impairments, some partially and some totally blind. What I've learned from them is that most rely on some sort of screen reader to access information.. Web designers and developers alike still believe the current use of CSS and other complient code makes information accessable to all but that is not the case. In most cases the sites will fit the w3c accessibility standards but according to those I've spoken to it's light years from connecting visually impaired with information and giving them the same experience as those with full vision and hearing.

This isn't only about accessibility, it's also about how to inform, instruct or to sell, products, services or ideas to all humans through interactive technology. And to be truly successful in doing so interactive technology such as websites, must be without a question, optimized for humans.
